Stepping into Charlie's is like stepping back in time. It's been around forever (well, 33 years according to the menu), and it shows, in everything from the decor--comfortable and humble--to the waitresses--the type that will call you "hon"--to the menu--chicken fried steak-ish--to the clientele--cowboy hats and gimme caps. Authentic is the word that comes to mind. Fare is standard diner/truck stop type food. Nothing outstanding, but certainly good enough home-style cooking. But the ambiance of the place is what guarantees it the highest of ratings in my mind. You just don't see too many places like this around here. Worth a visit, and really not that far from North Austin.

Chicken and Dumplings Note: We went to Charlie's to try the chicken and dumplings special, which an article in the Austin American-Statesman indicated was served the third Thursday of every month. There was no chicken and dumplings on the menu when we went, the third Thursday of March. We asked the waitress about it and she explained that the Statesman had screwed that up. The way it works is that chicken and dumplings is offered every third Thursday in a rotation with two other specials--turkey and dressing, and fried chicken. The day we went it was turkey and dressing day. That was 3/16/2006. So, based on that, fried chicken would have been the special on 3/23, then chicken and dumplings on 3/30. Then back to turkey and dressing on 4/6, etc. So, if you need a dumpling fix, bust out the abacus and extrapolate from these dates.

This is for anonymous who posted "Worst Food and Service I have ever experienced. EVER". Obviously you are not from around here. We've been going to Charlie's since it opened and have never had a bad meal. You should have ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and enjoyed a real authentic Texas meal. Where are you from, anyway, California?

My wife and I like the chicken fried chicken,
we have had it 3 or 4 times and it alway is fresh and very moist.

Green beans are good but vary based on type served.

We are now regulars, once a week or so.

Horrible service

Did not enjoy my experience there at all. Food is overpriced. Agree with the previous poster, It's more of a truckstop than a steakhouse. Do yourself a favor and don't go.

A favorite from a long time ago...

I remember going to Charlies Steak House when I was a kid. It used to be "THE" friday night out with my folks. The ambience then is what I suspect it probably is now. My folks and my grandparents were neighbors with the Charlie that started the place and I believe that his son is who runs it now. Thinking back on those old days I would almost give anything to be back there now. :o)

The last time I was there the Chicken Fried Steak was awesome....light, crispy, good gravy and fries. My wife had a steak (I can't remember which one), my kids had burgers. It was good al the way around.

Will Charlie's ever win a competition against the 5-star restaurants no, but it will always have a place in my heart. It's how home town America should eat. And believe it or not, I will alwyas remember that Christmas that we lived in the apartment over the back of the restaurant when I was a kid. Life was good then.

I've had the steak at Charlie's...it was just fine! My wife and I started going to Charlie's a few years ago and it just happend to be on Turkey and Dressing day, my favorite! The place makes me think of a truck stop; nice people, low prices, and good food. Yes the salad is pretty basic, but you're not going to get candied pecans, apple slices, prociutto and gorgonzola at a nice little family restaurant. I think the soup and the green beans are canned, so get the fried squash! You can swap it with the extras on your meal and it's wonderful!

The prices went up recently, but just a little.

Best CFS in Austin area

Anonymous' -1 rating is not what Charlie's is about. Charlie's is old-school food, back when you could go out, spend a very reasonable amount of money, and get great home cooking style food without having to cook it yourself. The chicken fried steak is the best in the Austin area and is a secret that few folks know about. The breading is light and crisp, and the dish isn't 50-65% breading like most other restaurants.

Very homey atmosphere, the people who work there are great and know how to serve good quality food in a very friendly manner. They also make fantastic enchiladas if you don't feel like getting the CFS or fried chicken. Try it, I really don't think you'll be disappointed unless you are expecting a high-dollar steakhouse, because that isn't what Charlie's is. Charlie's is a treasure, a reminder of wonderful small-town mom and pop style eateries.

My husband and I are new in the Plugerville area and wanted to go to a Restaurant for a steak. We have driven by Charlie's Steak House many times on our way home so we decided to dine there for a steak. First of all this is not a steak house, there are only 3 steak entrees on the menu, the rest of the menu is comprised of chicken fried steaks, enchiladas, hamburgers.....
We ordered two Ribeye Steak entrees for $18.00 each, the most expensive single entree on the menu. The Entree comes with soup or salad and baked potato or french fries. When the soup and salad arrived my husband and I quietly joked that the soup looked like a Campbell's chicken and rice soup and the salad consisted of lettuce chunks, a few tomatos & barely a small bit of carrot. When the Ribeye arrived we each took our first bite and immediately could tell that the steak was not right. It tasted like iron, was bitter, definitely did not taste fresh. We both immediately spit the food out! I am 8 months pregnant and knew that this steak would make me sick. Honestly, the meat was spoiled, it was very very obvious.
We asked a waitress, not our waitress, to come to our table and we explained the situation to her, the meat was bad. She was nice and took the steak away from the table and handed us a menu asking if we would like to order anything else. Our waitress came by and asked what was wrong and we told her the steak was bad. She just looked at us and said "we keep it refrigerated". I replied, "But for how long??", she asked me what I meant. So although pregnant and hungry, we decided to just leave and asked for a check out of politeness, never really expecting to get a check for a meal that we were unable to eat.
The waitress handed us a check for the soup and salad portion that comes with the entree, $3.25. I was in disbelief and shock that she would actually ask us to pay for the soup and salad after what we had been through and being jeapordized with bad meat. We walked to the bar to pay and we were met by a middle aged thin man who I think was the owner and who said he was the manager in charge. My husband was explaining the meat was bad and the man in charge was defending his meat and not at all accepting the possiblity that it could have been bad. He hands my husband the credit card receipt and I make the comment that I can't believe he is charging us for the soup and salad. He very rudely looks at me and says, "you ate it didn't you!". I'm speechless to him and tell my husband that we should go and we won't be back. The man in charge who I think is Charlie, responds loudly across the bar and into the restaurant by saying that he is better off that we don't come back ever again. We quietly leave. Worst restaurant experience ever!

Take me back to mom's cooking.

If you like down home cooking and that home made taste, then this is the place for you.

Charlie's has been around forever and there is a good reason, good food. The hamburger steak and onions is great! The food is good and the prices are reasonable. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Great food and reasonable price
