I never went to the original Dot's, which burned down a few years back. After serving food from a temporary trailer during the interim, Dot's is back up and running in Pflugerville. Business is booming--the line was out the door when we went, at 1:00 on a Thursday.
I had the chicken fried steak, which covered 80% of the compartment-ized cafeteria-style-unbreakable-plastic plate, mashed potatoes and corn. CFS was good, potatoes were good (chunky, not really mashed, but tasty), corn was good, and roll was delicious. Unfortunately, they serve a "spread" instead of real butter, which such homemade rolls deserve.
My dining companions had chicken and dumplings and fried catfish. All diners were happy with their meals. Definitely worth a repeat visit, just be prepared to wait.
The Food could not make up for the service

My husband and I thought we would try this landmark restaraunt. We went during lunch. We had a very unpleasant server. We got the feeling she did not approve of our being together. He asked for the baked chicken, she looked at me, then asked him if he wanted "white meat" (I am white, he is not). He politely asked for a leg quarter, then continued to ask for some of the roast beef. She stared him down, said "are you sure? It is going to be another $5.50?". He said yes, and then we continued on through. I asked for the roast beef, and mac and cheese and black eyed peas(same as my husband). He was given twice the amounts of all items than myself. Not a single word out of her mouth gave the imppression that she wanted to be there or wanted us to be there. To top it off, the cheese cake was not home made, but from a box.... The roast beef mac and cheese and black eyed peas were great, but for $38 for 2 meals, we expected to at least feel welcome to be there.
Nowhere else like it-!

Dot's has great home cooked food, and I know, because I have been cooking for 40 yrs myself. I love the fried fish ,meatloaf ,beef tips,..oh hell I love it all! You have to try her homemade yeast rolls, and her sweet potato pie, they are the best! The place is a remodeled pizza place ,that is a little tight seating at times, but hey,no tip either to worry about. It is cafeteria style, and everything I have tried is really good. ! The meals are a littel pricier than other lunch spots, but you are getting real food here, and you get what you pay for.
Leave your calorie counter at home and enjoy!

I have eaten here twice and had the meatloaf. It was so good the first time, I had to get it the second time. Today I think I'll try something else. I drive pretty far to eat there on my lunch break and every person I take with me loves it as well. Of course we only go just after payday but its worth the price. Its the same price as a combo at Fudruckers (for those that need a price comparison). Thank you Ms. Dot.

Just went there for the first time for lunch. The food was excellent. I had the beef tips with rice, mac and cheese, buttered potatoes, and a slice of pecan pie. The portions are huge. (I couldn't finish everything I ordered.) The price was higher than what I normally would pay for lunch, but worth every penny. I am definitely going to be a repeat customer and am taking my wife there for dinner tonight. I haven't had home cooking like this at a restaurant in years.

Great Southern Home Cooking. We (5-8 people from work) occasionally take a LONG lunch and drive up to Dot's. I've also taken a vacation day just to eat there. Maybe 'anonymous' is a Yankee and doesn't understand Southern Home Cooking? Does his 10 year old cook for 300 people?

The food has always been great but it's more than just about the food. Ms. Dot is such a wonderful person and cares about each of her patrons--always has time to talk to ya and has NEVER been slack on the quality of her food or the quantity. Hope those of you with premature negative comments will just keep them to yourselves- I'm sure you're newcomers that don't care much about anybody or anything that resembles family. I'm a proud repeat, satisfied customer since the early days of Dot's Place--- as a matter of fact, we're heading now to take our out-of town guests- as always!

Dot's sucks. Obviously none of you have EVER had real "home cooking" before. The service is poor, the food is terrible. My 10 year old could cook better food.

Been eating there for years. The prices have went up from her previous location, but so has everything else. Still worth the drive. Not sure where the previous responder was from, but I have never seen spinach served there. It is usually "collar greens". Quite a bit different in taste. Also, there has never been any service. It is self-serv. You even go get your own tea refill. But on the other hand, there is no tipping. As far as her companions uneasy stomach, I am usually so full it is hard to breath. But I still find room for here wonderful deserts.

Then I can see why you'd love the food served at Dot's. Personally, I'm not a fan of foul tasting spinach and yams, and mediocre chicken fried steak. The worst part of this place isn't the food, it's the price. I went with my boyfriend. When I handed the cashier my 20 I was expecting to get back oh about 5-10$ back, imagine my surprise (disgust) when the total came out to over $20. My boyfriend had an uneasy stomach after eating from here (he had lasagna, spinach, yams). The service was crap as well. They seemed very unfriendly to us who knows why we were doing them a favor by going there. This is the worst place to eat, very bad food, lousy prices, and poor service. The fact that there wasn't even a sign above the establishment should have been our first sign. I was hoping to support the local economy but the food, prices, and the service is such crap it would do the locals a favor by just going out of business. Have a nice day :)

This was a favorite lunch spot till the old place burned own :(.
The new one still has the same great food though a little of the "charm" of the old house is gone.
Still VERY worth the drive for some real honest comfort food :)
P.s. The homemade lemonade is still there but it is behind the cashier so you have to ask for it :o)
