Faltering

Reviewer: Chris

Original Review Date: 08/27/2005

Rating: +1/+3(Not bad)

Consistently good sandwiches delivered with an Austin Stoner flair. I always get a small turkey on wheat, so can't comment on any other offering. But it's always a very good basic turkey sandwich, largely due to the razor-thin sliced red onions and the magical Tundersauce. It's also quite affordable, especially if you don't need chips.
Their website could use some work. What's with the annoying swirling gif on their home page?

Geek Bonus: It's right next door to Fry's.

Grime Alert: They don't seem too concerned with wiping down the tables. Last visit, I didn't even want to rest anything on the table because it was so sticky. Contrast that with the sparkling (even during the heavy lunch rush) Culver's. But sticky tables will not deter me.

Downgrade Alert: Dateline 4/12/2007: I'm revising my rating down to just "Not Bad". Now that I've discovered Jersey Mike's, I rarely go to Thundercloud any more. The last time I went, my turkey sandwich was OK, but pretty bland. The time before that, I got a turkey to go and when I got to my destination, discovered that the turkey sandwich had everything but the turkey on it. So the grime, slacker attitude, and bland flavors add up to a downgrade here at Auslunch.

T-Cloud is simply the best

What can you say...besides I eat there every day. Consistently good, healthy food, great staff that actually seem to care about how they interact with you. I always have a good experience at T/Cloud. I am hooked. Have been for 25 years. My guess is the ney-sayers have the bad attitude, the employees just pick up on their bad boo-joo. Austin's original and true to the roots it has grown. So they say.
Besides, they certainly seem to be involved with the Austin community non-profit community in a sincere and beneficail way.

tried and true ... a solid standby

Not always a first choice, but definitely better than Quiznos, and much more local flair than Subway. Subs a little smaller than I'd like, but Arbor area one has good selections. Daily specials are a decent deal, and can always finish up lunch with a trip to Amy's Ice Cream. Truly a great way to get a mid-day break from the grind!

good vegetarian menu

at subway, a vegetarian can only get one thing: salad in bread. up north, they used to have something called a veggie patty, but i am met with blank stares when i try to order that in a texas subway. thundercloud subs is a great sub shop alternative for vegetarians. their nada-chicken is delicious (albeit essentially a boca chicken patty), and they have a better selection of toppings than subway.

Sandwich Specials Redeem Bohemian Vibe

I'll just echo what some other reviewers have stated: Typically overpriced food and funky sandwich makers. (I guess they are doing their part to keep Austin weird.)

I will say that "not bad" is not necessarily a terrible thing. With the 2 for 1 Entertainment coupons or with the sandwich of the week (or whatever they call it), you can get a decent sandwich without spending a ton of money.

I just had a very good large egg salad sandwich on wheat bread the other day for $3. If they had one closer to work, I'd eat there often!

Always Wrong, Always Bland

The ingrediants are poor quality, orders are almost always incorrect, place is "slackerific"

Pass.

My girlfriend has stopped asking if I want anything when she goes to Thundercloud - she got tired of hearing the tirade whenever she asked.

What a gyp Thundercloud is. As white bread bland and nearly as inedible as Subway. The sandwiches are piss poor even if they can make it correctly. Perhaps I should say, "Dude" or "Bro" or "Brah" when ordering.

I also agree with heavenlyphil - why are Austin staples over-priced crap?

Good shakes

So the subs are ok. I dont hate them like alot of posters here. I do like Jersey Mikes a little more. But I think their shakes are the best in Austin. Unfortunately only some of their stores have the shakes. The one up in north Austin near the Arborteum has them. The one on north lamar close to my house is devoid of any and all shakes.

high quality

I like the quality of the ingredients that they throw in the subs. Thunderclould is always consistent -- I always know exactly what I am getting. My only complaint is that the subs tend to taste a bit bland. I think it's all the head lettuce drowning out the stronger flavours.

Thundercloud ROCKS

My first visit to Thundercloud was three years ago and I have been an avid fan ever since. The Classic Club is amazing, as well as the Smoked Chicken and the Pastrami subs. Very reasonable prices to go along with a great product. The store at Guadalupe and 32nd has a great atmosphere, as well as friendly employees. Highly recommend!

The soup made me sick

I decided to eat at the Lamar location for the first time for lunch, got their chicken with rice soup and was stomach sick within a few hours. Had the runs for the rest of the evening. They stated that I should have asked if their soups had any dairy or cream base. (Gee, now you tell me). So, some of their soups have a cream base - made out of what they didn't say. But it was my first and Last time eating there.

What do I mean like everything Austin? You pay a lot for a little. Subs are small and very expensive...a rip off a lot like the shops on south congress.

Horrible, limp, overpriced, disgusting

This is quoted from a blog entry I actually wrote a year ago:

"1) Delaware Subs.
2) Quizno's.
3) Subway.
4) A heaping wheelbarrow full of mammal feces.
5) Thundercloud Subs.

As you have probably gathered from the above ranking, I am not a huge fan of Thundercloud Subs. Nope. They are absolutely the worst. The strange thing, though, is that they are incredibly popular here. I don't understand why. . .

Thundercloud Subs are small, over-priced, made from substances that barely pass as meat and more often probably pass as stones or polyps, and their shops are staffed by hippies. And by hippies I mean hirsute men and women who travel in visible hazes of body odor and patchulli and very rarely take the time to pluck various insects and wildlife from their dreadlocks, not your typical modern day hippie who doesn't even have a job."

Plus good soups

I have to agree. While some people I know don't like the stoner / punk / alt kid vibe, I find it refreshing and good for employee moral. If you don't eat meat, try the "Nada Chicken" - it's one of the better meatless sandwiches in Austin. Heck, I eat meat all the time, and I still get the Nada Chicken pretty regularly. I would also suggest getting their "meal deal" where you can add a large soup and small drink to any sub for $2.50. And don't forget to leave your change in the tip jar. These guys usually work pretty hard, and those quarters and dimes add up.
